New collection: “Town & Country”

Fine Art Limited Edition

Hello – thanks for popping in.

On this page, you’ll find a selection of pictures celebrating one summer in London and in the west of England.

I have spent a lot of time in Dorset and Somerset and Devon and Cornwall.

Even if you have never been, I hope you will see something of my own fondness for these places.

The pictures of London are of moments when I looked about me and suddenly saw something that grabbed me.

But that’s not an adequate description, really, for what happens.

I find myself seized by a feeling of great attachment to something in the world before me, and make marks either right there and then or later, often looking at photos but also drawing from memory.

Somehow, by moving my hand and distributing colour, I hope to get back to that moment that grabbed me.

Goes against the habit of a lifetime to say anything straightforwardly enthusiastic about my own work, but I have to tell you that these pictures make me happy.

And I’m utterly delighted to hear that they please other people too.

I’m such a fan of your art – it really makes me happy! I can’t wait to get my new prints and hang them in my home. Thank you for creating them! – Jennifer M.

Each picture is available as a museum-grade print on archival Hahnemuhle German Etching paper.

Each one comes in two sizes:
– A4 (210 x 297 mm)
– A2 (420 x 594 mm)

The new collection

Looking Down Church Walk at 8pm

I walk down Church Walk every day, with my beloved schnauzer companion Peanut.

It’s been massively improved by the handiwork of my neighbours, who clear the verges, fill them with flowers.

West Heath Road, Evening

Walk down from Hampstead Heath, on a summer evening, and the sinking sun blazes through this sycamore tree.

Big Red House on Redington Road

The house isn’t quite as red as this. But it was blazingly hot that day.

Daisies, Day Lily and Lavender on Church Walk

These plants, in an urban landscape, just leaped out at me – PING! – as I walked past, with my beloved schnauzer Peanut.

Hollyhocks on Lyndale Avenue

When my daughter N. was little, we used to collect the seeds from hollyhocks and scatter them here and there in our neighbourhood as self-appointed guerrilla gardeners. But we can take no credit for the sheer beauty of this specimen.

Rain on the A303

For a while, I kicked myself for making this picture of rain on a fast road. Who wants to look at that!

But I knew really that rain can make an interesting subject. I love the atmosphere – the way light reflects and shines around the headlamps on the cars, even in daylight – and the great splashes.

Bovey Castle From Below

We visited Bovey Castle. The interior is wonderful. But what sticks in the mind is a long walk through the grounds and into the landscape beyond.

Bovey Castle, from above

Stopped and looked back to see how far we had come and saw this – beautifully framed by the gate and the branches.

Marconi Station, with turquoise inlet

Cornwall. The Marconi station is like a great big HELLOOO to North America. It’s from here that the first successful radio transmission was sent over the Atlantic. The sea was choppy that day. The church nestled into the hillside.

Closing Time at Mullion Cove Tea Rooms

We got here just in time for tea and scones. It was amazing to think there was a family connection to this place – not a place we’d ever heard of before.
